What is mucormycosis-The Black Fungus?

Mucormycosis is a very rare infection. It is caused by exposure to mucor mold which is commonly found in plants, soil, manure, and decaying vegetables and fruits.

“It is ubiquitous and found in soil and air and even in the nose and mucus of healthy people,” says Dr. Nair.
It affects the sinuses, the brain, and the lungs and can be life-threatening in diabetic or severely immunocompromised individuals, such as cancer patients or people with HIV/AIDS.

Its Infection

It usually attacks the brain, lungs, and skin. But during the corona period, it is also starting to infect the eyes.

The patient’s eyes have started burning due to its symptoms. Many times the patient has to lose their eyes to save a life. In some cases, it also infects the nose bone, and cheeks.

The mortality rate in black functions is up to 50 percent. It affects people with many types of diseases like diabetes etc.

The body’s ability to fight bacteria is temporarily destroyed when the patient stays in the ICU and is given steroids while undergoing treatment for corona. During this time, these black fungi attack you.

What are its symptoms?

Different symptoms appear for different infections. If it occurs on the scalp, infections such as unilateral swelling of the face, headache, nasal or sinus infections, black wounds on the nasal bridge or upper part of the mouth that quickly become more severe, and fever can occur.

Similarly, if it occurs in the lungs, problems such as fever, phlegm, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc. may occur.

How to avoid black functions?

According to the advisory issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the use of steroids is low and only on the advice of doctors.

Try to keep diabetes under control. Take less energy that does not affect immunity. Hyperglycemia means trying to keep more glucose in the blood under control.

Diabetics and patients discharged from hospital after Covid-19 (illness) should check their blood glucose periodically.

When using oxygen therapy, use clean and drained water in moisture. Do not take any antibiotics or antifungal products in your mind.

If you see any signs of black fungus, do not ignore it. If the nose is closed after healing from the corona, it can cause black fungus in addition to bacterial sinusitis.

In this case, do research. If there is a black fungus infection on the test, treat it. Remember, the black fungus can be cured if detected early. So, control this disease. Stay active and keep an eye on every symptom.
